With its “One More Thing” Mac event Tuesday, Apple moved its MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac Mini onto its new M1 chip, but its higher-end computers are keeping the old Intel chips for the time being.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro, the iMac, the iMac Pro and the Mac Pro are only available with Intel chips, which the computer has used for more than a decade.
With the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 512GB Mac Mini, you can still choose to go with an Intel-based chip, but opting for the M1 chip will knock $500 off the price of the former and $200 off the latter. The M1, which is a big brother to the A-series chips in its iPhone 12, is the only option for the MacBook Air.
Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about transitioning its higher end computers to the new chip.
